PTA Category Definitions

Members

All PTA Members since 1975 have passed practical and theoretical examinations to prove their ability as qualified Tuners or Technicians.
Technician Members however have not taken a test in tuning. 
It is only Members of the Association who have the right to use the PTA name and Logo for the purpose of business.

Honorary Life Members

Honorary Life Membership is awarded to Members who have rendered exceptional service to the Association. Honorary Life Membership may only be proposed by the Executive Council and granted by an Annual General Meeting of Members. 

Associates

Associate status may be granted to Piano Tuners, Technicians or Piano Factory Operatives who have trained in a reputable piano factory or workshop for no fewer than three years or to Piano tuners who have completed an approved course in pianoforte tuning  studies at a recognised College and have gained their proficiency certificate, and have subsequently earned a living as a pianoforte tuner, technician or piano maker for a period (of at least two years) which, combined with the training period, is at least five years. 
 
Associate status may be granted to Piano Tuners who are a member of another Tuners' Association and who satisfy the Executive Council that his/her tuning proficiency can be shown to be of a satisfactory standard.
 
Associate status may be granted to Piano Tuners who have earned their living as a Pianoforte Tuner, Technician or Piano Factory Operative for at least seven years.
 
Associates may not publicly advertise their registration and may not use the PTA name or Logo. Associates do not take the PTA test.

Students

PTA Students are those who are receiving instruction at a training establishment or piano workshop acceptable to the PTA. Some PTA Students will have finished their formal training and are waiting to take the PTA Membership Test. PTA Students have to wait for 2 years after completion of training in order to hone thier skills before they may take the PTA Membership Test. Students may not publicly advertise their registration and may not use the PTA name or Logo.

Patrons

Any person may become a Patron of the PTA upon payment of an annual donation. He/she will be invited to all General Meetings on a non-voting basis, but may not publicly advertise their registration and may not use the PTA name or Logo.
