Pre-dinner activities
Thursday evening:
A concert by young pianist Enpei Li – Sponsored by Phil Taylor
Friday evening:
London Steinway Factory talk given by Allen Wright – Freelance consultant to Steinway, Broadwood and Period Piano Companies.
Sponsored by Steinway & Sons
In 1919, managers of Steinway & Sons decided to open a third manufacturing facility in London (after New York and Hamburg). Although the project was begun with great enthusiasm, the factory ceased production barely two years later, in 1921, after having produced only one grand piano. Allen will present some fascinating contemporary photos of the factory, and identify the key personnel involved in its organization and operation. He will also consider the historical context that encouraged plans for the factory, and the various factors which led to its precipitous closure.
