| The School of Violin, Woodwind and Piano Technology offers a range of programmes in the making, repairing and tuning of instruments: | ||

The Piano Tuning and Repair programme The programme covers the range of skills and knowledge that piano tuner technicians need to equip themselves for work in either a company or in self employment. The course focuses on piano tuning, the full restoration and casework finishing of both upright and grand pianos, and involves a high proportion of hands-on practical work. |
Course entry Students wanted for 2008! There will be an intake in the next academic year beginning September 2008. Entry to the course is by interview and practical tests, and there is no specific academic qualification or musical background needed. A bias towards practical work is desirable. The course is accessible to all.

City and Guilds The course leads to the City and Guilds Stringed Keyboard Instrument Manufacture series of examinations, in both the theoretical and practical aspects of the subject. The full City and Guilds programme is studied over a three year period. |







Piano Technology at RNC | |
| RNC is acknowledged as the UK’s national centre for training people who are
blind or partially sighted for careers in piano tuning and repairs. The
internationally recognised VIEW Diploma in Piano Tuning and Repairs prepares
you for self-employment or employment as a Piano Tuner Technician. The programme includes: business skills; harpsichord tuning; history of the piano; music; repairs, maintenance and construction and theory and practice of piano tuning. You will have the opportunity to become involved with RNC’s student-run piano tuning business and gain experience through work placements. Employment prospects are very good, with the majority of trainees entering self-employment or employment in the music industry. Some ex-trainees have also diversified into piano sales and renovation. This career can be very rewarding financially as well as providing job satisfaction and independence. No formal entry qualifications are required. | |
